En el Sistema del Tratado Antártico - que comenzó inicialmente en 1960 -
ahora hay 53 estados miembros integrados, pero solo 29 de ellos son miembros con
pleno derecho, el derecho a participar en la toma de decisiones. Siete de los
estados fundadores han definido sus reclamos territoriales, y EE. UU. y Rusia se
han reservado el derecho de pronunciar reclamos. Las áreas reclamadas no son
reconocidas internacionalmente.
