The provinces are divided into communities, the data of which are shown in the table below. Parallel to the 2024 census, a new administrative structure was implemented in Burundi. The number of provinces was reduced from 18 to 4, and the number of municipalities from 119 to 42. This consolidation was largely achieved by merging the previous administrative structures into larger administrative units, but also in some cases by changing the boundaries of the new administrative units. As a result, there are currently no ISO 3166-2 codes, so a separate, temporary codification is given here. Another consequence is that the sum of the individual areas is almost 10% lower than it was in the previous structure of the 2013 territorial status. We will monitor any changes to the documentation in this regard and incorporate them promptly.
